What Is Aluminum Polishing?

Aluminum polishing is the process of removing oxidation, scratches, pitting, and surface imperfections from raw or bare aluminum to achieve a highly reflective, mirror-like finish. Unlike paint or coating, a polished aluminum surface reflects light like chrome — and because it's bare metal, it'll never peel, chip, or fade the way a coating can.

How Does the Process Work?

Aluminum polishing is done in stages — each stage uses a progressively finer abrasive to remove the scratches left by the previous step. The process typically starts with sanding to remove deep oxidation and surface damage, then moves through several polishing compounds until the surface reaches a mirror finish. The final step is a high-speed buff that brings out the full reflective shine.

The number of steps depends on the condition of the piece. Raw castings or heavily oxidized aluminum require more work than a lightly scuffed surface. At Nautical Polishing, we assess each piece individually and do whatever it takes to get the result right.

What Aluminum Pieces Can Be Polished?

Almost any raw aluminum piece can be polished. At Nautical Polishing, we work on:

  • Wheels — spokes, barrels, lips, and centers
  • Turbocharger housings and compressor covers
  • Engine parts — valve covers, intake manifolds, brackets
  • Fuel tanks and tool boxes
  • Boat hulls, trim, cleats, and fittings
  • Driveshafts, shocks, and steering stabilizers
  • Overlays, hitches, and custom fabricated pieces
  • Exhaust tips and pipes

If it's raw aluminum, we can most likely polish it. If you're not sure whether your piece qualifies, give us a call and we'll tell you straight.

Does the Piece Need to Be Raw Aluminum?

Yes — for a true mirror polish, the piece needs to be bare metal. If your piece has powdercoat, clearcoat, anodizing, or paint on it, that coating needs to come off first. We offer powdercoat removal, clearcoat removal, and anodizing removal so we can handle the full job from start to finish.

How Long Does a Polish Last?

A properly polished aluminum surface will hold its shine for years with basic maintenance. We recommend wiping pieces down regularly and avoiding harsh chemicals. Over time, aluminum will re-oxidize slightly — especially on pieces exposed to the elements — but a simple buff can restore the shine without starting from scratch.
