ANODIZING REMOVAL — A SPECIALTY SERVICE
Anodizing removal is one of the services that separates Nautical Polishing from most other shops. Anodizing is an electrochemical coating that's actually part of the aluminum surface — unlike powdercoat or clearcoat, it's not just sitting on top, it's chemically bonded to the metal. Removing it requires specific chemistry and experience to do it without damaging the aluminum underneath.
We remove black anodizing, hard anodizing, and color anodizing from wheels, suspension components, marine hardware, and any other aluminum piece. After stripping, we move straight into aluminum polishing to bring the bare metal to a mirror finish.

OUR WORK
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is anodizing and why does it need to be removed?
Anodizing converts the outer layer of aluminum into aluminum oxide — a hard, corrosion-resistant surface. It can be clear, black, hard, or colored. Like clearcoat, it prevents a true mirror polish. The oxide layer must be chemically removed to expose raw aluminum before polishing.
Can you remove black anodizing?
Yes. Black anodizing is the most common type we strip. Chemical removal dissolves the oxide layer cleanly, leaving raw aluminum ready for polishing.
How is it different from removing powdercoat?
Powdercoat is an applied coating that sits on top of the metal. Anodizing is part of the metal surface itself — the aluminum converted to aluminum oxide. Both need chemical stripping, but anodizing requires different chemistry to remove without damaging the remaining aluminum.
Do you polish after removal?
Yes. Anodizing removal is almost always followed by our full aluminum polishing process. We handle both steps in-house.
